It's considered to be a great transit hub for those looking at spending some time on one of island. Airlie beach is often populated with backpackers. The main street of Airlie beach is full of beach packer hostels and every night of the week there will be something going on. The main reason for this is its a much cheaper option of to stay in Airlie beach rather than one of the island. The islands can be quite expensive. By staying in airline beach you can enjoy cheap food and accommodation but still close enough to do day trips out the island. The ferry out to the islands can be quite expensive but you will still save money by using this option and stay in Airlie beach. Shute Harbour is where all the ferries and boats leave to take you around the Whitsunday. Shute harbour is a short bus ride from Airlie beach. Buses leave from the main street quite regularly. The Whitsunday coast is quite small and easy to find you way around. One of the main attractions in the large pool by the waters edge. This oasis is huge and quite popular in summer. especially during jelly fish season when it become dangerous to swim in the ocean. Down the road from Airlie Beach is Cannonvale. Its much quieter than Airlie beach and popular with families. There are a number of hotels and resorts to choose from. There is also a small shopping complex and grocery store. This is a great option for those families on a budget but still wanting to explore and enjoy the pleasures of the great Barrier reef. Buses to Airlie beach and Shute harbour run regularly from the main road. What to do· The number one thing to do at Airlie beach is to explore one of the wonders of the world the great barrier reef. Tours of the reef leave daily from Shute harbour. · A visit to one of the islands. Daily ferries leave Shute harbour destined for Hamilton island and daydream island. Two of the most popular islands. · A trip to white haven beach. proclaimed as the whitest beach on the planet this is not to be missed. A boat departing from Shute harbour takes you to white haven beach where the sand seems more like flour than sand. Enjoy a range of activities including swimming and snorkeling.
